After getting some dud Christmas presents last year, Ben Galvani decided his family needed more specific instructions. This year, the 11-year-old created a nine-page slide deck detailing every item on his list. One slide is dedicated to sneakers, including two types of Air Jordans. Another one, “Jerseys,” has pictures of gear from NBA athletes such as Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole. Then there are videogames for his Xbox and a temporary tattoo kit, the latter listed under “miscellaneous.”

More shoppers visited stores on Black Friday compared with last year. Photo: Victor J. Blue/Bloomberg NewsRetailers aren’t just having trouble getting shoppers to buy sweaters and other holiday items this season. Store credit cards are also a tougher sell. But the stream is drying up as Americans carry fewer cards and increasingly finance purchases with buy now, pay later providers. Interest rates surpassing 30% on some retailers’ credit cards aren’t helping, according to analysts.

Early signs—from the number of boxes loaded on railway cars to rising consumer debt—signal a weaker holiday season than the past three, when pent-up demand coming out of the worst of the pandemic sparked shoppers’ spending.

In some cases, the increases more than cover the hit from higher raw material, labor and other costs, fattening profit margins.
Nordstrom plans to close its Nordstrom Rack store on Market Street and its mall department store at Westfield San Francisco Centre. Photo: Lea Suzuki/San Francisco Chronicle/Associated PressSAN FRANCISCO— Nordstrom is closing two stores near downtown San Francisco, including one in a prominent indoor shopping mall, the latest blow to the city’s retail landscape. He now has three.
